 Special Educational Needs Minimize

Across the whole school the Special Educational Needs are catered for according to the individual needs of the pupils. We are in a unique position as a primary school to have on the Wilton Site a Specialist Learning Centre which focuses primarily on speech and communication support. This centre is run by qualified staff, including a Teacher, Teaching Assistant and a Speech and LanguageTherapist. Its main aim is to support children with speech, language and communication difficulties within the school. Statemented children are included in mainstream education, but withdrawn on a timetabled basis throughout the week, to receive extra support either individually or in small groups. This support covers Literacy, Numeracy, Auditory and Social Skills or the pre-teaching of Science  vocabulary. Speech production programmes are also given by the Speech and Language Therapist, according to individual need.

Any mainstream children who may require additional support with any aspect of the curriculum are  initially identified by the class teacher, who will then liaise with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator as to what support the school can provide for that individual. If the needs of the child can’t be solely met by the staff and resources within the school, then that child may receive external support from another professional, experienced in providing the specific assistance required.

As a school we look carefully at the provision available and supplied to Gifted Able and Talented pupils. We endeavour to ensure that those pupils are challenged and supported accordingly within the areas in which their abilities are stronger.

We take pride as a school in ensuring that the parents/carers of any child receiving additional support for any reason are kept closely informed on their child’s progress. We allow all stakeholders regular opportunities to be involved in discussions and decisions made, regarding the support given to their child and endeavour to support parents accordingly.

Any queries regarding the Special Educational Needs provision your child might need or is receiving can be discussed with the class teacher, Miss Hoad( the SENCO) or the Headteacher.
