Bereavement in school
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Bereavement is an issue that affects all schools, and one in which many staff feel they could benefit from a little guidance regarding what to say and how best to support a child. I am a former primary teacher and local authority advisor, and have spent years working with schools, charities and educational psychologists to create a package for schools that supports them in preparing the best possible response to help at times of bereavement. This includes:
The importance of language-what to say and how to say it
How children understand death at different ages, and how to support them
Supporting pupils, families and staff at times of bereavement-including difficult situations.
Systems to ensure effective communication at times of traumatic or sudden death
The impact of terminal illness
Being prepared for media interest
Policies, procedures and best practice
The importance of the long term. Why a plan for the long term makes a crucial difference.
Please don't hesitate to email me at info@wellbeingeducation.co.uk , or call Steve Harris on 07897 946231.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I do hope you know someone who will benefit from the information.
Warm Regards,
Steve Harris
Where to report issues in South West Wiltshire
Dear all,
At the recent South West Wiltshire Community Area Transport Group a concern was raised that there may be some confusion about where/who to raise issues with when there is a matter of concern. Rather than raising matters with individual officers (whose roles can change), Wiltshire Council has a system that allows you to raise your concern and then track progress online. Your Community Area Manager will, therefore, be the first point of contact, and it is then their job to link you up with the relevant service/officer.
In order to report an issue in South West Wiltshire, you can click on the link below:
All you need to do then is fill in a few simple details; every time there is an update you will be automatically sent an email to keep you informed. There is no limit to what can be reported; if it is an issue that is affecting your local community then we want to hear about it, and even if we are not the right body to take action we want to support you in the process. To give you an idea of the sorts of things that are raised, below are a few recent examples across Wiltshire:
- People parking cars on the pavement.
- Speeding.
- Need for seating at bus stop.
- Dumping of supermarket trolleys and litter.
- Anti-social behaviour.
The only exception to this process is for reporting road and lighting defects and hazards, such as potholes, blocked routes or broken street lights. For such matters you can go direct to Our Customer Lighting And Roads Enquiry Centre (CLARENCE) by following the link below:
If you have any further questions on any of this, please do not hesitate to contact me (details are given below).
Kind regards,
Stephen Harris

Parent Governor Vacancy
Tuesday, 01 May 2012
Dear Parents
Wilton and Barford Voluntary Controlled Primary School currently has a vacancy for a governor on the School's Governing Body. This is an excellent opportunity to become more involved in the school community, develop additional skills, a better understanding of the education system and transfer your existing abilities into assisting the development of a diverse and vibrant school. The skills, experience a governor has makes a vital contribution to the governing body’s functions of critical friend, supporter, watchdog and consumer voice for the school. As a whole, the governing body meets four times a year. In addition each governor is also a member of one of three committees – Finance; Staffing and Curriculum. The committees meet at least once a term to discuss issues in more detail. Also governors are invited to come into school regularly to add to their knowledge of the school. If you are interested but feel a little daunted by the responsibility you may be taking on, remember that full training will be available, and you will always act as part of a team. No particular experience or qualifications are required just enthusiasm and a commitment to the school. If you are interested in applying or would like more information, please contact the Clerk to Governors, Carina Sawyer (carina.sawyer@btconnect.com) or myself (head@wiltonandbarford.wilts.sch.uk).
